A place that I miss working at

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I worked at the Malaysian campus of Monash for more than 8 years both in faculty and professional capacities. I found colleagues to be very helpful and supportive. There is a very close collaboration between the campuses and mostly everyone has a counterpart on the other campus. The salary in the Malaysia campus might not be that comfortable for expatriates. However, it is competitive with most other universities in the country. One thing you will notice in the workplace is that everyone has pride in being a Monashian.

Too top heavy

Not a fun place to work. A top heavy management structure hears very little from front-line staff. Power-hungry megalomaniacs rule ruthlessly. No appreciation of good work. Sycophants are promoted without a due selection process.

Unrealistic expectations.

There is unrealistic KPI expectations placed on you. For example, you are expected to publish in high quality journals, obtain PhD students and grants. Unfortunately, the research support in terms of limited PhD scholarships, limited submission fees, limited grants etc have an impact on achieving your goals. There is also constant changes in administrative processes that is disruptive.

Poor management

Research manager is incompetent in managing the lab equipment. Feedback from researchers are not considered, i.e. more user-friendly online booking system. The working environment is healthy solely because of the fellow researchers are working well together to create a better atmosphere.

Neutral, Cannot comment much

-Was more of a part time job, couldn't comment much - Supervisors were rather open to suggestions and are supportive towards any practical solutions. -Flexible working hours with condition that research progress are attained and achievable -Work life balance is relative and depends on individual

A day at work

I have been here for 10 years and I have learned and also trained staff and student on how events are managed and coordinated . At times the hours can be long but not all the time . Hours can be flexible when is low peak . The work culture here is very warm and friendly . Benefits for staff and family are excellent . The enjoyable part of my job is I meet a lot of people and after the event is over the participants are happy and the organizers. I work quite a bit with Monash University Australia where graduations are concern and also for other events that are organised at the Malaysian campus .

Pros

Getting student helpers for events

Cons

Short of staff .

Research Assistant in a University

A typical day would start by having a short brief on what needs to be done. After that its on going research and data collection for analysis. I have learned to use multiple softwares which covers data analytics soft ware to data mining softwares, SPSS, E-views and Bloomberg. I also learned to use multiple quality data bases to acquire the needed information for proper analysis. The working environment was good. My co-workers were energetic and inspiring individuals working while taking up their undergraduates and masters. The hardest part of the job was also the most enjoyable part of the job. It was learning new information on a daily basis, learning the new softwares and information from the analysis.

Pros

Good working environment

Cons

More mentoring is needed
